Answering contract questions with AI, source included

CityTec Infra works under large contracts with many documents, requirements and appendices. After a contract analysis for them, we are now building a Q&A tool that answers questions about such a contract from the documents themselves.

The question

How do you quickly find the answer to a contract question, and know for sure where it says so?

01 · The situation
The answer sat in the pile
A large contract consists of contract documents, requirement documents, appendices and general terms. The answer to a single question was often spread across them.
02 · What we are building
A Q&A tool with sources
The tool searches every document of the contract and puts the place it says so with every answer. If something isn't there, it says so honestly instead of guessing.
We test it with real questions from practice, so we know the answers are right before the team works with it.
03 · What it will bring
One contract first, then more
In November we show the first version on one contract. After that the same set-up can move to more contracts, and later to work preparation.

Goals

An answer with its source: every answer shows where it says so in the contract.
Honest when it isn't there: the tool says so when it finds nothing.
Less searching: the team doesn't have to leaf through every document itself.
Ready for more contracts: the same set-up will work for other contracts too.
